I’m sure we all feel somewhat buffeted by the events of the past week. Never has the phrase that seven days is a long time in politics felt more apt.

In just under a week (which could feel like a long time) you have the chance to be part of the debate about the future, of retail at least. Not surprisingly, last Friday morning we jumped into action to bring in a Brexit session and I’m delighted that Colm Lauder from MSCI Real Estate – the property index experts – has stepped up to the plate.
I’m going to talk about our great speakers in a moment but firstly I want to talk about you. We already have Tesco Pensions, M&G Real Estate, Legal & General, Aviva, British Land, Grosvenor, TH Real Estate, Kanyon…I could go on…attending and for me the delegates are as important as the speakers because these events are designed for debate, discussion, networking and sharing. This is an opportunity to be part of an important discussion and also, as time poor people, to learn a lot in a small amount of time.
Our event on 7 July is about covering the big issues in one concise, action-packed day. So you’ll be among the first to see a video that’s just been produced for the German Council of Shopping Centres about the future of shopping. You’ll hear from retail guru Terry Duddy, best known for steering Argos/Homebase and now a non-exec at Hammerson.
There can be no-one better than Hamley’s to talk about leisure with international business director Helen Barnish; Marcel Kokkeel is flying in from Helsinki to talk urbanisation; Scott Scarfe of CEBR is going to talk about demographics, especially the ageing population – a hugely ignored topic.
Place making – we’ve got Hammerson, TH Real Estate (on Edinburgh) and Battersea covering that, and finally we have the excellent Dilys Maltby, who cut her teeth at Body Shop during the golden Roddick era, talking about making spaces amazing.
It’s going to be a great day but, if you’ve been remiss enough not to sign up yet there’s still time, it will be better together. Now where have I heard that phrase…
